& Sons

On the margins of Tokyo, a dysfunctional band of outsiders is united by fierce loyalty and a penchant for petty theft.
Five people inhabit the cramped space under Granny Hatsue’s (Kirin Kiki) roof, none of them related by blood. Yet, each trust and accept one another more than most genetic relations do. When the young ‘son’ is arrested, secrets are exposed that upend their tenuous, below-the-radar existence.
Kore-eda fills the film with grace notes, humour and fine observations, cleverly circling and filling out each character.
Understated yet ultimately deeply affecting, ‘Shoplifters’ adds another powerful chapter to director Kore-eda's richly humanistic filmography.
